Horrors in the Night

Photo taken seconds before Sarah heard the screams.

Quick update after we wrote the post from last night: we got a little spooked. We tried to pick a camp site, but ended up having to leave. Here’s the story:

While putting money into the collection box, Eric, outside the van, heard some screaming. He kind of ignored it, thinking it was maybe some kids up by the road. When they got to a campsite, he heard it again while opening up the door. He stopped to listen, and Sarah, not being able to hear from inside the car, got spooked by Eric’s sudden pause (but thought he was messing with her). Then, she leaned out the vehicle and heard the most agonizing screams followed by “I’m in pain”. We looked at each other and immediately started hightailing it out of there.

Unfortunately, we locked up and went to drive off and we forgot our camp table near some bushes, so we had to go back for it in the pitch dark. Sarah was brave and jumped out to get it (Note: Sarah was terrified), and we sped off. However:

On the way out, a car came blazing into the park, followed by a tall youngish guy sprinting behind. Then, that guy made a hard left straight into the bushes out of sight. Another car came peeling in behind him.

We didn’t stick around to find out what was going on, so we just went to try to find a new place to stay. It was after midnight, so after much driving up and down Glenorchy road (we probably did this about 8 times) we parked by the side of the road overlooking the lake, where we spent the night in our 2005 Toyota Estima Jucy camper van.

We did eventually find a place to sleep
After a long day starting in Fiordland, an engagement, 2 boat rides, 2 bus rides, transition to a camper van, hike to Glenorchy, Japanese dinner, writing blog posts, and the hours long hunt for a place to sleep, no fear was going to prevent us from crashing.
Spoiler alert: we survived the night and awoke to water views.

Update 5 days later: we’ve been monitoring the Queenstown news and there’s been no reports of missing persons, so we’re pretty sure it was just teenagers messing around.
