One Monthiversary in Chiang Mai!

Activity level: 🌶️🌶️

Modes of transportation: 👟

This ended up being our sick day. We both slept late, and didn’t have anything planned for the day. Sarah found that she was still having a lot of issues with nausea, so we decided it would be best to take a full day to try to get over it without doing anything too intense.

Sarah needed a movie to relax, so we put on “Spy Kids,” (classic!) and relaxed watching it (and Eric, who also may have had a cold, played some chess).

By this point, neither of us had a single piece of clean laundry; so we found a laundromat and made two full loads. Sarah came with Eric to help, and, after putting in our laundry, we walked over to a pie and coffee shop that Sarah had found.

We got some mango cream pie since it looked good, a “coconut cup” (a specialty), and a couple of lattes. The shop also had the ability to put any image on the latte, so we gave them some of our favorites! They turned out pretty cool.

Can’t believe this is coffee!

From there, we split up for lunch since Sarah couldn’t be around the kind of food Eric wanted. She ended up getting a really good burger (but couldn’t finish it), and Eric got an amazing dish of crispy pork with garlic. We also walked around the neighborhood we were staying in, called Nimman, a little. We both really enjoyed the more relaxed, eclectic vibe of the neighborhood and Chiang Mai in general.

The burger that was not to be.

After lunch, Eric went to pick up the laundry and found that it was all gone. He panicked for a second, then realized that Sarah probably had already picked it up (or so he hoped). So he headed back to the hotel, and we met back up. The dryers didn’t work fully, so we had to lay everything out to dry a little more while we got back in bed to chill.

We started working on the blog, but Eric realized that we were running out of upload space. So he started pruning “unattached” photos before realizing that “unattached” didn’t mean what he thought it meant. It turned out that he was deleting about 40% of our photos, breaking the blog.

We were using a free service which had terrible options, so we didn’t have any backups or easy way to fix everything. So Eric spent a lot of the rest of the day migrating us to our own domain and website that we could have more control of (it took a few more days, but we eventually recovered everything). If you were wondering why everything was broken for a few days, that’s it.

This was the view for most of the day – drying laundry strewn about the room and Eric panicking trying to fix the blog (spoiler alert: if you’re reading this, he did).

We realized later in the day that it was officially our one monthiversary, so we had to celebrate. Sarah made reservations at what just happened to be a Michelin star (ha!) restaurant in a nearby mall. It turned out to be super low key, but the food was great.

Odd place for Michelin star restaurant, but it lived up to its reputation.

We also ended up ordering too much food: we started with their famous dumplings, and followed those up with these crazily crispy and creamy egg custard buns. For entrees, we got amazing fried salt pork and some delicious lime sea bass, along with some tasty oyster sauce mushrooms as a vegetable. We got some hot tea, and since they had a special, we got some fruit and coconut custard for dessert.

Food was delicious and Sarah was finally able to eat again… somewhat.

Unfortunately, Sarah flew too close to the sun and Eric had to eat the majority of it—so he ended up feeling pretty full. The meal was excellent though!

One month of forever ✅

After dinner, we walked around the mall, which turned out to be pretty nice. It was more like random independent shops than a traditional mall, so we enjoyed looking at the stalls. We even ended up getting some small earrings since Sarah hadn’t had any on the trip.

We didn’t walk around too long, since we were both ready to go back and lay down. Sarah spent a good bit of time researching elephant sanctuaries, and we ended up booking one for very early the next morning (7:30!). So we decided to go to bed fairly early.
